Chapter 1397

---

Lucinda fought back the tears welling up in her eyes, mindful of her pregnancy and the need to remain composed. Swiftly, she ascended the staircase, her heart heavy with emotions.
However, immediately she walked to the door, her eyes caught sight of a beautiful woman emerging from Atticus’ room.
Valerie’s gorgeous eyes were red from crying, which made her look like a frightened rabbit. She looked devastated.
Valerie’s presence didn’t surprise Lucinda. A sneer curled her Lips as she confronted her, “You were the one who dragged me into the water many years ago, and it was also you who called me sister in my dream, right?”
Deep down, Lucinda had always harbored suspicions about Valerie’s identity. Valerie possessed an inexplicable sense of familiarity, and it seemed she had been clandestinely watching Lucinda even when she was still in Forden.
Lucinda hadn’t been able to confirm her doubts until Valerie showed up here last time. That was when she began to question her motives.
Now, with her father’s accident and Valerie’s reappearance, Lucinda had connected all the dots.
Valerie raised an eyebrow and paused for a brief moment. A trace of sarcasm flitted across her face, but just as quickly, she reverted to her innocent facade.
“I don’t know what you’re insinuating. Your father saved me before and have helped me immensely. I heard about his accident, so I came to see him. That’s all,” Valerie responded.

Lucinda’s gaze turned icy as she stared at Valerie. Then she brushed past her and walked towards the room only to halt abruptly.
“How much longer do you plan to put on this act? Will you surprise me once I acquire my inheritance rights tomorrow? But I already know the answer. You won’t be able to see shock on my face now.”
Valerie narrowed her beautiful eyes, seemingly in control of everything.
“Miss Simmons, we don’t have to wait until tomorrow. And I do believe that you will still be shocked later.”
With that, Valerie gracefully descended the stairs in her high heels, and disappeared around the corner.

Watching her back, Lucinda made up her mind to see her father first.
She walked into the room where Atticus lay with his eyes closed. An oxygen mask was aiding his breathing, and a bandage was wrapped around his head. A heart rate monitor was placed on the bedside table.
Though the oxygen mask obscured half of his face, Atticus appeared exhausted and frail.
Seated on a nearby chair was Florrie, who, upon Lucinda’s entrance, rolled her eyes and wore a sullen expression.
Lucinda approached the bed, sat on the edge, and clasped her father’s hand. Tenderly stroking his weathered skin, she turned to Florrie and said, “Leave. I want to be alone with my father for some time.”
Without a word, Florrie turned and left the room.
Once they were alone, Lucinda began speaking.
“Dad, we had our disagreements when you decided to marry Florrie. But, honestly, I can’t blame you. Mom passed away long ago, and you needed someone to be there for you. I get it.
But Florrie isn’t a good person. She has ill intentions from the beginning. You’ve always used a wheelchair, and she pushes it for you.
How did you suddenly fall down the stairs this time?
