Caleb replied, “They’re doing fine. To ensure their safety, I haven’t enrolled them in school yet and have taken some time off for them.

They’ll start attending once everything calms down.”
Hearing his words made me feel a bit better.
“How have things been for you in jail these past couple of days? Any trouble from the guards?” Caleb asked.

I didn’t want him to be concerned about me, so I stretched the truth a bit. “Everything’s fine. No trouble from the guards. Actually, it’s been quite peaceful here. It’s the quietest it’s been in a while.”
Ivy muttered, “That’s not true. You’re itching to get out.”
I chose to ignore her comment and continued talking to Caleb about small, everyday things, as if we were just lounging at home.

Then, Caleb glanced at his watch and his expression turned serious all of a sudden. “Actually, there’s something else I needed to talk to you about today.”
Debra’s POV:
When Caleb appeared so unexpectedly, I felt a surge of nervousness.
Now Caleb and I were in the midst of the storm. Everything started to turn against us. His visit suggested he had something important to discuss.
I clutched at my clothing, struggling to calm myself. In a soft tone, I inquired, “What’s going on? Is something wrong?”
Caleb remained silent.
He stared at me, and then unexpectedly, a cryptic smile formed on his face.
His actions left me puzzled. Just as I was about to probe further, Caleb produced a key from his pocket. And with a snap, he unlocked the jail door.
Fear washed over me, draining the color from my face.
“Caleb, are you really planning to break me out of here?”

I glanced around anxiously, fearing the guards might catch us.
I was puzzled by Caleb’s odd smile earlier. Now, it seemed he was simply overwhelmed and exhausted. Under immense pressure, he couldn’t find a viable solution, so he had no choice but to resort to such an extreme measure to save me.
In a gentle tone, I tried to dissuade him. “Please stop, Caleb. Are you willing to undo all we’ve worked for? You should leave. Whether or not they release me, I can’t let you be dragged down too.”
Caleb’s father, already disapproving of me being a witch, would be furious if he learned Caleb had attempted a jailbreak. It would tarnish Caleb’s reputation and intensify his father’s desire to see me gone.
Yet, my plea seemed to have no effect. Caleb approached me.
He reached out, clasping my hands tightly. His weary voice, already hoarse, brimmed with tenderness. “Dearest Debra, would you still like to proceed with the wedding?”
“What?”
