Zoe nodded with understanding. “Got it. I understand now.”
I added, “There’s another sign. When someone is under control, their eyes might flash red. That’s how I figured out something was wrong with Caleb’s father. If you’re unsure, you could ask witches you know for help. However, detecting memory erasure isn’t straightforward with this approach.”
Patrick’s expression turned grave upon hearing my explanation.
After a thoughtful pause, he expressed, “Witches can be quite fearsome, having such control over people.”
Then, catching my gaze, he quickly added with an embarrassed smile, “Debra, I didn’t mean to say you’re fearsome. I knew you’re a good witch who wouldn’t misuse your power in such a harmful way.”
I dismissed his concern and said, “It’s okay. Just be extra vigilant around new faces. The guy in a black cloak and the flower girl could be accomplices, watching us from the shadows. That’s possibly how they managed to catch you off guard.”
“Understood.” Patrick nodded earnestly. “I’ll stay alert.”
The time was slowly slipping away.
Caleb and I exchanged glances, and then we both took the hands of the two kids. We waved goodbye to Patrick and our friends before leaving.

Seeing us about to leave, the tough girl looked on the verge of tears.
I squeezed her hand and reassured her, “Sure, we’ll come back someday.”
The night was pitch-black, the sky resembling thick ink. Inside the car, we watched the pack’s lights flicker like fireflies before vanishing into the distance.
