My father looked relieved when he said, “I’m just glad I got here on time. You four could’ve been in serious trouble otherwise.”
I saw the worry in his eyes and felt a sense of warm rush in my heart, melting away any upset feelings I had. I said awkwardly, “Dad, thank you.”
He just smiled and replied dismissively, “Hey, no need for all that formality. We’re family, and it’s my job to keep you safe.”
He seemed so relaxed and friendly; it was as if all the misunderstandings we had over the years just vanished.
In that moment, it hit me. My father had truly gotten over his issues with me being a witch.
He had changed, for real.
As I was still processing this change, he suddenly asked, “Debra, any clue who’s trying to hunt you down? Could it be those hardheaded elders from the Thorn Edge Pack?”
I didn’t say anything.
Even though the werewolves and witches claimed Gale sent them to kill me, I wasn’t sure if I should tell my father. It was just one side of the story, after all, and there wasn’t any solid proof that Gale was behind it.

Maybe they were lying about Gale, or maybe it was all a big misunderstanding. After all, it didn’t make sense for Gale to want me dead. Doing that would make enemies of the Thorn Edge Pack and the Silver Ridge Pack, and my father and Patrick would declare war against her.
After thinking it over, I decided not to tell my father just yet.
I figured Gale, being the smart leader she was, wouldn’t try to kill me without a good reason. There had to be something more to it. And if I just blurted out that Gale was behind the attack, my father, with his quick temper, wouldn’t even hear me out on why it might not be true.
That could easily spark a war, and that was the last thing we need.
Misunderstanding or not, it was always the innocent ones who ended up paying the price.
I caught Caleb’s eye and then looked over at my father. Shaking my head, I said, “Dad, I’m just as clueless. They showed up out of nowhere. Caleb and I barely had time to react before we were completely surrounded.”
My father’s expression darkened, but he managed to control his anger.
