He shot Johanna an icy stare, retorting, “I didn’t bring a gift either, does that mean I’m ignorant of the so-called rules? Since when did family gatherings become a rule book? Does a gift signify understanding or its absence reflect a lack of consideration? You just graduated this year, right? How much did your gift cost? Did you earn the money yourself?”

“I was merely stating an observation, why are you defending her so vehemently?”
